Rulerwork quilting minimizes the need to rotate your quilt under a domestic machine which cuts down on time and effort. You will quilt uniform designs with smooth lines and it will also help you develop your free motion skills. The stitching direction is determined by the movement of your hands. Quilting in several directions ensures a squarer finished piece. So bring your machine, drop your feed dogs and let's have some fun!! (Make sure your machine is clean and oiled before class.)
Supply List/Homework:
There are 4 blocks to complete should you wish to do a wholecloth, quilt-as-you-go quilt. The 4 block classes will repeat every quarter throughout the year.
**Ruler Foot ** (see below)
Block ONE: JANUARY/MAY/SEPTEMBER Classes
Good Measure "Every Angle" Quilting Ruler (either low shank or high/longarm thickness)**
Block TWO: FEBRUARY/JUNE/OCTOBER Classes
Good Measure "Every Curve" Quilting Ruler set + "Every Angle" Ruler (either low shank or high/longarm thickness)**
Block THREE: MARCH/JULY/NOVEMBER Classes
Good Measure "Every Circle" Quilting Ruler set + "Every Angle" Ruler (either low shank or high/longarm thickness)**
Block FOUR: APRIL/AUGUST/DECEMBER Classes
Good Measure "Every Oval" Quilting Ruler set + "Every Angle" Ruler (either low shank or high/longarm thickness)**
Make and bring to class a 22" square quilt sandwich with solids or blender fabrics. A second, smaller practice sandwich is also recommended. Use either safety pins or temporary spray adhesive for basting.
Purchase the Good Measure Ruler(s) sold at the Shop
Cutting Ruler at least 24" in length with 45 degree lines for marking. I find a smaller cutting ruler for marking is helpful too...say a 2.5"x12" size.
Aurifil 50 wt. is recommended or whatever works with your machine! Contrasting thread color vs your fabric color might be very helpful.
Seam Ripper
Scissors/Snips
Full Bobbin to match backing, same weight thread to match your upper thread.
80/12 OR 90/14 Topstitch needles
Marking Tools (Clover Chaco-Liners when working on any colors other than white, and blue wash-away pens when working on white - marking LIGHTLY. Having two different color markers might be helpful.
Quilting Gloves
Free Motion Glider
I recommend you consider purchasing a Posture Perfect Sit Upon. It is important your sitting height is appropriate. You'll get a better view and less fatigue.
Students will bring their own machine with manual for this class, and must be very familiar with using that machine beforehand. You must be able to adjust thread tension, set up for free motion quilting, and have had some recent practice with free motion quilting on the machine before taking this class. You will also need a table top extension table or maybe boxes that are the same height as your machine so you have a flat surface to work on.
Students MUST be ready to go at the time the class begins. Have your machine threaded, correct needle, feed dogs down/ready for free motion, and your practice sandwich ready. Make sure your tension is good to go for free motion.
Each completed, quilted block can be finished as a stand alone (for a pillow, table topper, etc.) OR you can choose to do the whole series of blocks.
**The type of ruler foot determines the template thickness you can use, so it is very important to know which type of foot works with your machine - ie low shank or high shank (NOT an ordinary embroidery foot.) I recommend contacting a machine dealer with your make/model of machine and they can help you purchase the right ruler foot. Let us know -well in advance- if your dealer is unable to help you, and we can check with our own resources.**
**To determine if your machine requires a low or high ruler foot, measure from the center of the screw hole to the needle bed of your machine in foot down position. Low shank is 1/2 inch from the needle bed and a High shank is about 1 inch from the needle bed. Again, your machine dealer can help clarify what you have. Typically, any machine with a ruler foot can use a high shank/longarm ruler. HOWEVER, some machines don't have clearance behind the foot and would require low shank templates.**
