Sewing: The Schlep Bag

This is not a class for learning to use your sewing machine. Before taking this class, you should have completed our Intro to Sewing class, or otherwise already know how to use your sewing machine, including Winding & installing the bobbin; threading the machine, 
The Schlep Bag is a little like a potato chip – you can’t have (or make) just one! In this class, you will choose the size of bag you make. The instructions you take home afterwards will help you easily make more in any number of sizes.

For the outside of the bag, choose 2 coordinating fabrics. For a totally reversible bag, plan 2 fabrics for the inside.

Please read the supply list and cut your fabrics before coming to class. Adding an interfacing to the straps is totally optional, but should be done before class if desired.

Supply List for Schlep Bag

32 squares of quality quilting cotton prints or batiks, all the same size. Choose 6, 7 or 8 inches for your squares. Please have your squares cut before coming to class.

• 2 fabrics for the outside of bag: Cut 8 squares of Fabric 1; Cut 8 squares of Fabric 2.         

• 2 Fabrics for the inside of the bag: Cut 8 squares of Fabric 3; Cut 8 squares of Fabric 4.
• Fabric for Straps: 2 strips to coordinate with outside fabrics and 2 strips to coordinate with the inside fabrics. Cut each strip 5 inches wide and a length 1 inch longer than you would like your straps to be when finished.  (If you want a wider strip, you can cut the strips 6 inches wide)

Additional supplies:

Sewing machine with manual and assortment of presser feet
Thread for piecing and topstitching
Scissors, Pins or fabric clips
Fabric marking pen/pencil
Rotary Cutter, Cutting mat *
Square or rectangle ruler for cutting the top of the bag *
* Use ours if you don't have your own to bring.
