Learning to Sew for Kids 8 yo +

This 3-session hands-on class teaches the basics of using a sewing machine while creating a project in each class. In addition to the hands-on instruction, students will receive a handout with instructions for each project.

Bring to each class: Sewing machine, empty bobbin, scissors, pins, seam ripper.  Don't have a sewing machine? Machines are available to borrow if arrangements are made ahead of time.

Come in a few days before the first day of to select your materials.

Day One: Sewing Machine Basics:

  • Winding bobbins, threading the machine
  • Adjusting thread tension
  • Changing stitch patterns/widths/lengths.
  • Sewing straight, sewing curves.
Project: Drink Cozy.
Materials included: practice fabric and thread; fabric, batting and elastic for the cozy.

Day Two: Making a Bag
  • Stitching seams
  • Turning a bag
  • Topstitching.
Project: Reversable Smart Bag
Materials included: Fabric and interfacing panel

Day Three: Making a pillow
  • Piecing a pillow top
  • Hemming an edge
  • Creating an envelope style pillow cover.
Materials included: Fabric, pillow form.
