The Schlep Bag

The Schlep Bag is a little like a potato chip – you can’t have (or make) just one! In this class, you will choose the size of bag you make. The instructions you take home afterwards will help you easily make more in any number of sizes.

For the outside of the bag, choose 2 or 4 fabrics that coordinate. You can go with a single fabric for the inside, or plan 2 to 4 fabrics for a totally reversible bag.

Please read the supply list and cut your fabrics before coming to class. Adding an interfacing to the straps is totally optional, but should be done before class if desired.

Supply List for Schlep Bag

32 squares of quality quilting cotton prints or batiks (see size guide, below). Have squares and handle strips cut before arriving for class.*

·         Outside of bag: 16 squares. If using 2 fabrics, cut 8 squares of each. If using 4 fabrics, cut 4 squares of each.

·         Inside of bag: 16 squares. For a plain lining, use just one fabric. For a reversible bag, use 2 or more fabrics. If using 2 fabrics, cut 8 squares of each. If using 4 fabrics, cut 4 squares of each.

·         Straps: 2 strips to coordinate with outside fabrics, 2 strips to coordinate with the inside fabrics. Cut strips 1 inch longer than you would like your straps to be when finished and 4 times the desired finished width (For example, a 4 inch strip will finish to 1 inch wide, a 5 inch strip will finish to 1-1/4 inches wide).

* For a small bag (i.e. lunch bag) cut the squares 5 inches.

For a medium size bag, cut the squares 7inches or 8 inches.

For a large bag (i.e. big enough to hold a queen size quilt), cut the squares 10 inches.

Additional supplies:

Sewing machine                Thread for piecing and topstitching

Scissors                             Pins, fabric clips

Rotary Cutter                     Cutting mat

Square or rectangle ruler for cutting the top of the bag.
